British

Stages
FS1 to Year 13
Main qualifications
GCSEs or IGCSEs around Year 11, then A Levels (or BTECs) in Years 12 and 13
Teaching style
Structured and subject-focused. Students choose fewer, deeper subjects at A Level, usually three or four.
Good fit for
Families who may move to the UK, or children who know which subjects they enjoy and want to specialise.
Worth knowing
Specialising at 16 narrows options early. Check which A Level subjects each school actually offers.

Teaching style
Inquiry-based and broad. Students keep studying languages, maths and sciences to the end.

Globally mobile families, and all-rounders who like projects, writing and independent work.
Worth knowing
The Diploma is demanding. Many Dubai schools offer only the Diploma on top of a British or American programme, so check which IB stages a school runs.

Good fit for
Families heading to the US or Canada, and students who do better with steady coursework than high-stakes exams.
Worth knowing

How to decide

  1. Think about the next move. If you are likely to return home, the curriculum from that country usually makes the transition easiest. If you expect to keep moving, the IB is designed to travel.
  2. Think about university. A Levels, the IB Diploma, CBSE and ISC, and US diplomas are all widely used for university entry, but requirements differ by country and course. Check the entry rules for the places your child may apply to.
  3. Think about your child. Some children thrive with a few subjects in depth (British A Levels), some with breadth and projects (IB), and some with steady coursework over big exams (American).
  4. Avoid switching too late. Moving between curricula is easiest in the early and primary years. Switching in the final two or three years of school is harder because the exam courses differ.
  5. Then compare schools, not just curricula. Use KHDA ratings, wellbeing and inclusion, fees, location and a school visit to choose between schools in your chosen curriculum.
